Dental Crown FAQs
Why do I need a dental crown?

There are a number of situations that require a dental crown. A crown may be used to protect a weak tooth from decay, to cover and support a filling, to restore a broken tooth, to hold a dental bridge in place, to cover discoloured teeth or to cover an implant.

How should I care for my temporary crown?

At Kew Dentistry, recommendations may involve avoiding sticky, chewy or hard foods, reducing use of the relevant side of the mouth, and taking particular brushing and flossing precautions. Your dentist will discuss individual recommendations at your appointment.

Does the final crown require special care?

On the whole, no. However, make sure to maintain good oral hygiene practises, including brushing and flossing.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, dental crowns last 5-15 years. This may depend on oral hygiene, grinding or clenching, and other factors.

Does a crown protect the tooth from decay and gum disease?

No it does not. This is why oral hygiene practises such as brushing and flossing are still very important.
